Fellowship Programs
Fellowship in Child & Adolescent
Psychiatry
The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry offers an accredited two
year fellowship program which residents can begin during their PG-IV or
PG-V year of training.
The objective of the Harbor-UCLA program is to develop highly qualified
specialists in child, adolescent, and family psychiatry. The program is
designed to begin in the first year by imparting basic knowledge and
skills, along with an intensive outpatient experience which includes
crisis management, medical backup to non-physician therapists, and a
rotation as a consultant to a community mental health clinic. The second
year includes a neurology rotation, inpatient experiences at a
well-known psychiatric hospital, consultative experiences to pediatrics
and community schools, and opportunity for individual electives. During
the course of their training, fellows also participate in both teaching
and research activities.
The program employs a variety of teaching approaches including seminars
(some of which are at UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute in the first
year), clinical conferences, and lectures. The course work includes
fundamentals of child and adolescent psychopathology, pediatric
psychopharmacology, child and adolescent development, family therapy,
consultation-liaison psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and substance
abuse.
Most significant are the carefully selected faculty who provide
individual clinical supervision. This includes observation and
psychodynamic supervision of the resident’s treatment of young children
in a playroom setting. Supervision is provided both by Harbor full-time
faculty and volunteer faculty. The Division of Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry is enriched also by serving as a training facility for
general psychiatry residents, medical students, social work students,
and both pre- and post-doctoral psychology students.
It may be possible, particularly in the second year of the fellowship,
to tailor educational activities in the direction of individual
interests and future goals.
