The Residency Program
Harbor-UCLA Medical Center offers a fully accredited program of four
years of psychiatric training, including three years of general
psychiatric residency and a first year Categorical Program. The
Categorical Program, described in the PGY Years page , meets the
American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology’s first year requirement for
training. While the Harbor psychiatry residency is affiliated with UCLA,
we are an independent program; application is made to us directly.
GOAL
The Residency Program in Psychiatry at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is
designed to train clinically competent and intellectually curious
general psychiatrists who have comfort in a wide variety of practice
situations. The range of patients seen and their broad ethnic diversity
combine with the varied interests of the faculty to provide a rich
opportunity for psychiatric education. At Harbor the approach is a
"hands on" one, and residents have extensive opportunities for clinical
experiences.
FACULTY
The service areas and multidisciplinary teams of the department are
directed by full-time psychiatrists, all of whom are members of the
Faculty of the David Geffen UCLA School of Medicine. Faculty members at
Harbor have interests in many clinical and research arenas. In addition
to the full-time faculty, Harbor relies on its more than 60 voluntary
faculty members, drawing heavily from the many talented private
practitioners in the South Bay area. These clinicians have a variety of
psychotherapeutic skills (e.g., psychodynamic, cognitive, behavioral)
and serve as primary supervisors of psychotherapy cases.
